New Website Painting The Clouds With Sunshine
Martin Faulkner, Downham Market-based artist-designer, launches his new website this month.More than just an artist, Martin has acquired over 25 years' experience of many aspects of decorative and applied art and prides himself on the comprehensive range of services he offers to both the commercial and private sectors: although Martin is a member of Produced in Norfolk under the label of miliner, hat making is only one of his many skills: he describes himself more accurately as an all-round Artist-Designer - in the old-fashioned sense of the word – as were the designers of old whom he admires so much.
He is not just 'old-fashioned' in terms of his personal style and tastes: as well as endeavouring to authentically recreate the style of the Art Deco period in his creative work, it is equally his aim to deliver old-fashioned service, courtesy and quality, without marketing gimmicks or hype.
Martin is an expert in the Art Deco style and in the social history of the early to mid-twentieth century both practically and academically, and was a pioneer in the mid-Eighties of the now widespread Vintage movement. He has 15 years' experience of working with children in primary and secondary education in both the state and private sectors, and of working with children and the general public within the heritage industry over the same period. A published illustrator, he also directed and performed in his own historical dance and drama company giving performances and
living history interpretations, and his diverse career has developed his natural creative and communication skills to culminate in an expert level.
Martin's ethic is to live and spread the values of integrity, excellence, social conscience, and good service – both in craftsmanship and conduct. He believes that we should learn from the past and must keep alive traditional, tried and tested skills, techniques, values and standards, and thus
preserve the best of the past to enjoy in the present. He strives to achieve this in his work, which expresses the unashamed romance and nostalgia he feels so deeply in his spirit, creating the imagesthat are close to his heart. His work is always carefully researched and is characterized by accurate
period detail throughout. Combining sound historical knowledge and meticulous attention to detail with his theatrical instincts, he endeavours to capture the elegance of the past, to take us beyond thestress and frantic pace of modern existence back to the gentler, slower life we all yearn for: whengood taste and good manners were the watchwords, when pleasures were simple, whensentimentality, gentility, niceness, and prettiness were not derided, and when 'Glamour' and 'Elegance' really meant something!
