Warm weather brings early bumper crop
Norfolk farmer Roger Crane who has grown asparagus on the family farm since 1997 at Marsham north of Norwich, is reporting an excellent and early crop thanks to the unseasonal warm weather.
“It’s arrived a whole week earlier than usual” says Roger “so it’s a very encouraging start to the season. At the moment we’re picking a very tasty variety called Gijnlim an F1 hybrid; later we’ll be picking Backlim, a Dutch variety.”
Roger makes his own compost using organic waste from our brown wheelie bins; he believes this makes a huge difference to the taste and quality of the crop, which is only picked from spring until 21st June each year.
You will be able to buy the asparagus for £2.50 a bundle or £7.0 a kilo at Wroxham Barns Farmers Market on Saturday 13th June or buy from the layby on the A140 north of Norwich
